Free custom-domain email hosting: what ‘free’ actually includes

Free custom-domain email is not one product. It can mean inbound forwarding, a browser mailbox, a temporary trial, self-hosted mail or a genuinely free but limited hosted service. The useful comparison is not the price alone: ask where messages are stored, how replies are sent and which operational limits apply.

Five different products are described as free email hosting

Email forwarding redirects incoming mail to an inbox you already use; it does not create a stored mailbox or an outbound sending service. Browser-based webmail stores messages and normally supports sending as the domain, but a free tier may omit IMAP, POP3, SMTP credentials or attachments.

A paid-provider trial is full featured only for a limited period. Self-hosting removes a mailbox subscription but adds a server bill and continuing responsibility for security patches, queues, spam filtering, bounce handling and IP reputation. A beta hosted mailbox absorbs those costs in exchange for conservative quotas and a narrower feature set.

Compare capabilities before comparing price

For each option, record whether it stores incoming mail, sends as the visible domain, supplies a browser inbox, supports external mail clients, retains sent mail and provides a documented recovery process. Then compare mailbox count, storage, daily sending and receiving limits, attachments, aliases, catch-all behavior and support expectations.

Forwarding is often enough for a contact alias that rarely needs a reply. A hosted mailbox is clearer for ongoing correspondence because incoming mail, replies and sent history remain in one workspace. A conventional paid provider is the safer choice when a team needs client access, shared mailboxes, higher volume or a contractual service level.

Why a legitimate free tier has limits

Stored messages consume durable storage. Every inbound message must be accepted, parsed and screened. Every outbound message uses delivery infrastructure and creates bounce, complaint and reputation risk. Providers also pay for monitoring, abuse prevention and support.

Low quotas are therefore an important control, not merely a marketing restriction. Unlimited anonymous sending would attract abuse quickly and could damage delivery for every domain using shared infrastructure.

DNS records you should expect

Ownership TXT records prove control of the domain. MX records route incoming mail. SPF identifies permitted sending systems, DKIM publishes keys used to verify message signatures, and DMARC checks alignment with the visible From domain while publishing reporting and enforcement policy.

These records do different jobs. Do not create two SPF policies at the same hostname, guess a DKIM selector or replace an existing MX set without understanding where current mail is delivered. DNS authentication improves identity assurance but cannot guarantee inbox placement.

Free Domain Mail’s current beta scope

Free Domain Mail provides browser-based mailboxes for domains verified through DNS. The current service allows up to three mailboxes per domain, ten sent messages and twenty received messages per verified domain per day. It is intended for low-volume person-to-person use and product testing, not bulk mail, campaigns or cold outreach.

It does not currently provide IMAP, POP3, customer SMTP credentials, automatic forwarding, catch-all addresses, aliases, shared mailboxes or file attachments. Incoming mail is processed through Amazon SES and stored in the service’s Singapore-region pipeline; outbound mail is sent through Resend. There is no published storage quota, retention guarantee or SLA, so business-critical users should keep independent copies and choose a service whose commitments match their risk.

A practical decision framework

Choose forwarding when the address is mainly an inbound alias and replies can come from another identity. Choose limited webmail when you need a real custom-domain inbox, your volume fits the quotas and browser access is sufficient. Choose a paid provider when external clients, team administration, attachments, stronger support or higher throughput are requirements.

Consider self-hosting only when operating SMTP, spam filtering, backups, blocklist monitoring and incident response is work you knowingly want to own. Software being free does not make the operating responsibility free.

Evaluate safely before changing production mail

Confirm the authoritative DNS provider, export the existing zone and note all current MX and SPF values. Test a secondary or newly created address first. Check public DNS, send in both directions and inspect authentication results on an actual received message.

Do not remove the previous route until the replacement accepts incoming mail and can send authenticated replies. If the service’s limits or support model do not fit, restore the recorded MX and SPF configuration.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing by the first-year price while ignoring renewal, storage and sending limits.
  • Assuming forwarding automatically includes authenticated outbound replies.
  • Publishing a second SPF record instead of merging legitimate senders.
  • Replacing live MX records before testing a rollback path.
  • Treating SPF, DKIM and DMARC as a guarantee of inbox placement.

Frequently asked questions

Is free custom-domain email really free?

It can be, but the tradeoff is usually forwarding-only behavior, a time-limited trial or strict feature and volume limits. Verify the operating model rather than relying on the word free.

Can I use Free Domain Mail in Outlook or Apple Mail?

No. The current beta is browser webmail and does not expose IMAP, POP3 or customer SMTP credentials.

Will a free provider damage my domain reputation?

Price alone does not determine reputation. Authentication, recipient expectations, bounce and complaint rates, content and sending behavior all matter.

Do I have to transfer my domain?

Usually no. Keep the registrar and edit mail-related records at the authoritative DNS provider.

What happens when I reach Free Domain Mail’s daily limit?

Additional activity is blocked by the application quota until the daily window resets. The service is deliberately designed for low-volume use.
