A custom-domain address does not require Google Workspace. You need a mailbox provider plus access to the domain's authoritative DNS.
What the provider must supply
Look for incoming mail hosting, authenticated outbound sending and clear MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC instructions.
If the domain only needs to receive mail, a receive-only catch-all inbox such as Free Domain Mail needs just one MX record and one TXT ownership record, but it cannot send or forward mail.
Keep the domain at its current registrar unless there is a separate reason to transfer it.
Verify the complete path
Publish ownership and mail records, then test delivery in both directions with an external account.
Use Email Health Check to catch missing records, but inspect a real message header for alignment.
